Border Management Authority declares Easter operations a success! The Border Management Authority (BMA) has reported an 8 percent increase in travel movements during this year’s Easter period.
BMA commissioner, Michael Masiapato, provided an update on Easter operations at ports of entry on Monday.
Masiapato says that between 15 and 24 April, officials facilitated smooth cross-border travel while also tightening security measures.
“We registered about 1,057,063 movements across all our 71 ports of entry. This is an increase of 8% compared to the 2024 easter period.”
Masiapato said he considers the easter operation a success, crediting the hard work and dedication of all teams involved.
Meanwhile, more than 6,000 people were arrested at the country’s borders over the Easter period for attempting to either enter or exit South Africa illegally.
Masiapato said this year’s interceptions show significant progress in strengthening control over the borders.
“We have been able to intercept and apprehend a total of 6,253 persons who were attempting to either enter or exit South Africa illegally. This is an increase of 61% compared to 2024. out of these 6,253, about 4,795 were undocumented.”
