EFF calls for Finance Minister Godongwana’s resignation after court order suspending VAT increase

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is calling for the resignation of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, following the court order suspending the value-added tax (VAT) increase.

On Sunday, National Treasury was dealt another blow after the Western Cape High Court set aside the fiscal framework and nullified the VAT adjustment.

The EFF and da had taken their objections to the VAT increase to the court, arguing the adoption of the fiscal framework was legally flawed.

Addressing a media briefing in Johannesburg, EFF leader Julius Malema says the court order proves Godongwana’s incompetence.

“If he had the decency, he [Godongwana] should be resigning after all of this… They have lost the confidence of the people of South Africa and the business community should not trust them. It is the business community that has spent billions changing its VAT system for nothing and they should pursue any means necessary to hold the government accountable.”
