Earlier this month, media personality Jub Jub was exonerated when the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) withdrew all charges of rape, attempted murder, and assault against him. Sunday World reported that Jub Jub’s lawyer argued that one of the complainants, his ex-girlfriend and baby mama Kelly Khumalo, had pressed charges against him out of personal vendetta. Other complainants included Jub Jub’s ex-girlfriends, actress Amanda du Pont and Radio and TV host Masechaba Khumalo, as well as his cousin and singer, Bonokuhle Mtshweni.
Ntsako Baloyi, the legal representative for Jub Jub (real name Molemo Maarohanye), asserted that Kelly’s allegations were an “afterthought” following Jub Jub’s controversial 2021 interview with podcaster MacG. During this interview, Jub Jub accused Kelly, with whom he shares a 14-year-old son, of using muti (traditional medicine) to maintain their romantic relationship. Baloyi claimed that the podcast triggered individuals to misuse the law for personal revenge. He argued that the charges were part of a smear campaign and a vindictive ploy rather than genuine attempts to seek justice.
“In light of the above, the applicant pleads with the state not to proceed and waste resources on charges that appear to be an afterthought, smear campaign, and vindictive ploy,” Baloyi stated. He emphasized that this situation had subjected Jub Jub to public scrutiny based on personal vendettas rather than facts.
“The state is strictly invited to consider the above in its totality and apply its mind properly. Ultimately withdraw all charges,” he advised. Baloyi further contended that Kelly failed to provide any medical reports, including a J88 form, doctors’ notes, or clinical records, to support her claims. As a result of these arguments, the NPA decided to withdraw the charges against Jub Jub, freeing him from the legal battle that had ensued.
